Community Trust South Takes Strategic Steps to Safeguard Future Granting

Community Trust South remains committed to supporting its communities not just today, but for generations to come.

With this front of mind, Trustees have made the difficult but strategic decision to reduce the 2026 grants budget to $5.5 million, down from $6.5 million in 2025.

Community Trust South Heamana/Chair, Margot Hishon, said this future-focused decision reflects Trustees’ commitment to responsible stewardship.

“This decision is about safeguarding the support we can provide for future generations. Acting now ensures we can maintain the Trust’s portfolio and continue investing in our communities for many years to come.”

This adjustment is part of a proactive strategy to rebuild the Trust’s capital base following several years of high inflation, ongoing volatility in global investment markets and continued support for its communities during COVID-19. As of 31 October 2025, the Trust’s portfolio sits at $270 million, below its inflation-adjusted target of $317 million.

To support this capital rebuilding priority, alongside the grants budget reduction the Trust has continued to review and restructured asset classes to maximise investment returns, reduced the operational budget for this current year, and lowered the cap for general grant applications to $50,000 (previously $75,000) effective from 1 April 2026.

Chief Executive Officer Jackie Flutey acknowledged the impact a reduced grants budget may have on some organisations:

“We know this change will present challenges for some, and it was not taken lightly, nor is it a reflection of the incredible mahi of the groups and individuals we support across our communities. Our priority is to ensure funding continues to align with the community priorities identified in our strategy and remains available for generations to come.”

“Even with a smaller grants budget, we are in a strong position to help. We will continue working alongside our communities to ensure they can access the support they need and support a thriving south.” Mrs Flutey said.

The reduced grants budget will take effect from 1 April 2026.
