For hundreds of rangatahi across Aotearoa each year, the answer is the Young Enterprise (YES). More than a business programme, YES helps young people discover their potential, build confidence in their abilities, and develop the skills to shape their own future
From pitching ideas and solving real-world challenges to working as a team and running a business, students gain experiences that cannot be learned from a textbook alone. Along the way, they develop resilience, leadership and the belief that their ideas can make a difference
Community Trust South is excited to be the naming sponsor the 2026 Southland Entrepreneur of the Year Award, recognising a young person who demonstrates entrepreneurial excellence, leadership, personal growth and a desire to leave a positive mark on the world.
For the Trust, supporting YES is about more than celebrating great business ideas. It is about investing in young people and helping create an environment where every rangatahi can see opportunities ahead of them, whether that path leads to employment, further education, entrepreneurship or community leadership.
Community Trust South Chief Executive Jackie Flutey will join this year's judging panel and is looking forward to hearing the stories behind the region's young entrepreneurs.
"One of the most exciting things about YES is seeing young people discover what they are capable of," she says.
"The programme gives rangatahi the confidence to step outside their comfort zone, take risks, learn from challenges and believe in their own potential. Those experiences can shape the course of a young person's future, while also helping build a stronger and more vibrant Southland."
Regional finalists will be announced during the week beginning 5 October, with winners celebrated at the Southland Regional Awards on 21 October.
As the awards draw near, Community Trust South congratulates all students taking part. Their creativity, determination and willingness to give things a go are a reminder that our future is in good hands.
Because when young people are empowered to dream bigger, believe in themselves and pursue opportunities, the impact extends far beyond the individual. It strengthens families, and our communities for generations to come.
