In 1996 when the region was experiencing an economic down turn, we created the Amenities Grants scheme. Funding of $2 million was allocated to kick start some new community projects, these included the Queens Park Aviary, community pools, halls and playgrounds.
“We got applications from each area and they were all so different … in a lot of cases it was a big smarten-up for the area. It was pretty well received, and it was also key to starting people thinking that there would be funding available to help them in their projects for the future, so it created that climate.”
